Chapter Twelve

“Did your mom remarry?” Dax’s question took Lexi out of her concentration.

She tensed, sitting at the small kitchen table where they’d had their first date, and now doubled as his desk. She studied him, in his oversized blue sweatshirt and jeans. “Why do you ask?”

He’d called her in a panic earlier in the day after he’d gotten off his paramedic shift, asking if everything was okay, if she was okay, if her mom was okay. His concern had been sugar in her blood, sweetening her up and making her gooey for whatever he wanted. When he’d asked her to dinner, she couldn’t say no.

“I tried to find your mom in the hospital today.” He focused on her, making her nerves tingle, and not in a good way. “Trying to find you.”

“My mom did remarry, so she has a different last name.” The tingles tangled in her belly. She told the truth, yet she was leaving a significant portion out. Before he could ask further questions, she asked one of her own, knowing he’d want to go into detail. “So tell me again about how you helped with the accident victims.”

“A training session became the real deal.” His expression lit up and he went into specifics. The confidence in his expression made him even more handsome, showing a depth of character he didn’t display around others.

Only her.

She warmed inside. “What a great experience.”

“The little girl was so worried about her mom.” His gaze deepened, expressing concern for the victims, making her heart flow with an intensified longing. “I should check on them at the hospital.”

The naturally fun and flirtatious Dax was attractive, but this Dax, the assured and sympathetic Dax, drew her in like snow on the mountain.

He paused and took her hand. “I love how we can talk about this stuff and you understand.”

The word love had her pulse dropping. Her mind knew he didn’t mean he loved her. “It’s great how serious you are.”

His chin tilted up. “I am and I like it.”

Warmth spread through her bloodstream. The lust she’d felt for the charming rake flowed deeper. He was deeper. And she wanted to demonstrate how much she appreciated this deeper, more complicated Dax. Steadying her nerves, she decided to be bold. Take a risk. Do something different.

“Me, too.” She flicked her nail across his palm and trailed her finger up to his wrist. “This confident-serious Dax is a real turn-on.” Her voice went husky.

His eyes rounded, and his mouth softened. He stared for several seconds, as if debating what to do. His lips lifted into a goofy grin. “You don’t like the fun-loving Dax?”

The grin, normally so attractive, speared through her lungs. Rejection. By changing the mood, he’d pulled the chair from under her, and she floundered. She crossed her arms. “I like all sides of Dax.”

“I like all sides of Lexi.” He tugged her crossed arms apart and held both of her hands in his. “All sides.”

His smooth words ignited sparks across her skin. Not a rejection, more of a delay.
